During one of the Republican Presidential debates, all of the other candidates were asked if Mitt Romney’s religion was a cult. Each candidate stated that Mormonism wasn’t a cult. A better question would have been; what is Mormonism? The best place to obtain the answer is from Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Joseph Smith claimed to have met God the Father and Jesus Christ, (both in the flesh) and asked them which denomination of the Christian church he should join. The answer displayed on the LDS.org website is as follows:
I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all ccorrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.” Joseph Smith – History of the Church Vol. 1 verse 19
So according to Joseph Smith “ALL” churches outside of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are all wrong, corrupt and abominable! Therefore, if Mitt Romney’s church is not a cult, all other “Christian” churches must be! In an effort NOT to appear offensive, each and every other Republican nominee condemned the entirety of the Body of Christ for the Mormon faith.
Was Joseph Smith correct? Are all churches wrong? Is the LDS church right? If Joseph Smith and the claims of Mormonism cannot past biblical test, both must be rejected and Mormonism branded as a cult.
1Thes 5:21Test everything. Hold on to the good. (NIV)
Mormons say Jesus wasn’t conceived by the Holy Spirit
CHRIST NOT BEGOTTEN OF HOLY GHOST. I believe firmly that Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God in the flesh. He taught this doctrine to his disciples. He did not teach them that he was the Son of the Holy Ghost, but the Son of the Father. Truly, all things are done by the power of the Holy Ghost. It was through this power that Jesus was brought into this world, but not as the Son of the Holy Ghost, but the Son of God. Jesus is greater than the Holy Spirit, which is subject unto him, but his Father is greater than he! He has said it. Christ was begotten of God. He was not born without the aid of Man, and that Man was God! Author: Joseph Fielding Smith Source: Doctrines of Salvation Volume: 1Page: 18
The Bible states that Mary was with child by the Holy Spirit
Matt 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. (KJV)
The Book of Mormon claims Jesus was born in Jerusalem!
10 And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God. Book of Mormon Alma 7:10
The Bible said Jesus was born in Bethlehem
Matt 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, (KJV)
Mormons believe that God the father has flesh and bones!
The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us. Doctrine & Covenants 130:22
The Bible states by the mouth of Jesus Himself that the Father is Spirit!
John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (KJV)
Joseph Smith spoke of multiple Gods!
In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods: and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it. Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 349
The Bible affirms one God.
Deut 6:4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: (KJV)
Isa 43:10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. (NIV)
The religion of Mitt Romney failed the above test of Christianity in each instance and it fails in areas not stated in this blog. If the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the true Church of God, then Mormonism is correct and all other churches are wrong; however, for that to be true, the Bible must be false. If we are to believe the Bible, Mormonism is wrong and a cult. Our Republican leaders, who all claim to be Christians, would be better served to know Christian theology.
